Speckled Trout or often called "Brook Trout"

During periods of cool water in May and June, Speckled Trout feed along shorelines in very shallow water and can be taken by casting towards overhanging tea brush using light spinners baited with night crawlers. Using flies on the surface during calm periods in fly season can be very successful as well. Later in the season, best results are achieved by the use of baited spinners in cool areas such as near logs, rocks, springs and waterfalls. Baited hooks are successful in deep waters on many occasions. Some of the most popular lures include Panther Martins, Abu Reflex, #1 Mepps and most other bright spinners tipped with night crawlers.

Lake Trout or often called "Greys"

Lake Trout are most active during early season when water temperatures are in the 40 to 50 degree range. However good results are achieved in summer months during early morning and late evening by trolling with baited lures using 8 lb test line on a medium weight rod in deep waters. waters baited with minnows or night crawlers during warm water temperatures have resulted in many good catches. Your selection of lures should include Williams Wobblers of various sizes, Lucky Strikes, Lhur-Jensen, North Port Nailer as well as many other spoons of the glitter variety. Successful jigging lure are various bright spoons, Daredevils, Eppinger Flutter Chucks and spinners.

Rainbow Trout

Rainbow Trout are usually taken by fast trolling techniques using lures baited with minnows or night crawlers n depths of 5 to 15 ft and weighted so rigs are 1 to 3 ft off the bottom. Good results have been achieved by using a bobber and regular hook baited with a large minnow or fully loaded with a night crawler

at a depth of 5 to 8 ft below the surface. The most commonly used lures include the Rapala, multi coloured jointed minnow, small Cleo's and bright spinners.

Our great Trout lakes include the following:

Blue Lake : This beautiful 10 mile long lake is located 30 miles south-east of our base at Ranger Lake. The lake has a mountainous shoreline, very rocky and boasts crystal clear water with depths up to 200 ft. Blue Lake itself has all 3 species of Trout with Lake Trout averaging 3 to 5 lbs, Rainbow Trout averaging 2 to 5 lbs and Speckled Trout in the 1 to 3 lb range. There are also 2 portage lakes to the north of Blue Lake, White Bear and Little White Bear that also provide excellent Trout fishing.

Gord Lake : This scenic lake is 1.5 miles long and is located 35 miles north of our base at Ranger Lake. The lake has numerous inlets, bays and shoals and has depths up to 100 feet. The fishing here is Lake Trout that average 3 to 5 lbs, but we have seen fish in the 10 to 15 lb range. There is also good Speckled Trout fishing in the main lake where they would average 1 to 2 lbs, but it is the 3 small portage lakes around Gord Lake that provide the best Speckled Trout action.

Goulais Lake : The Goulais Lake area is a beautiful part of the country and is located 20 miles north of our base at Ranger Lake. The lake itself is 5 miles long and 3/4 miles wide with a rocky shoreline and depths up to 100 ft. The lake itself supports Walleye, Lake Trout and Speckled Trout and has 5 surrounding lakes that are all accessible by a short portage to the north-east of the main lake. These portage lakes contain Lake Trout and Speckled Trout of average size.

Missing Lake : This small Speckled Trout lake is located 43 miles west of our base on Hawk Lake. The lake is 1.5 miles long and 1/2 mile wide. It has creeks and streams leading to marsh areas along its rocky shoreline. Water depth in many of its bays reach 120 feet and the water is crystal clear. The lake is a good producer of Speckled Trout with size ranging from 2 to 6 lbs.
